Opp bid 4H vul, so is serious about this. I pass. Double may well be right though.

Close between pass and double.

Double has the advantage that partner may pull to 5D, with a prospective +550

PASS. It is tempting to try and get 200, but I see no reason why I am
beating this. Opponent knew he was vul.

Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities,
we didn't have to produce anything! You've never been out of college!
You don't know what it's like out there! I've *worked* in the private
sector. They expect *results*. -- "Dr. Ray Stantz", Ghostbusters

This was BBO ACBL speedball.

Pard had KQ765 T53 J3 J63 and bid 4S (doubled) which would have gone for
300. I pulled to 5D and went for 500. Both 0%. 4H goes for 500 and
96.1%. Pass was 63.5%. Sigh.

Can a passed hand *ever* bid 4 voluntarily over a pre-empt?

A double by you is asking for a spade bid from partner - you have one, 4H bidder should have at most three, so that leaves your partner and LHO to split nine of them. Even with four spades, he'll trot out 4S.

Exactly. Why do you not expect 4S?

Ah. I thought you said partner bid 4S in front of you.

If the oppo are sensible they think 4H is at least close to making at
this vul so I would assume declarer has the diamond ace in which case
there is no entry to dummy and you should make a spade+heart+2xclubs so
I think a double is right.

If it makes (ie declarer has singleton club and running spades after
your ace as a side suit) then bad luck but partner may pull to 5C if
that is the hand and I expect to make that or get very close.

Pass, seems like all the cards lie well for the opponents. There may be 3 Heart losers if we play in Diamonds. I may have 3 quick tricks against 4H, but I will probably get a Diamond lead.
