Here is a hand where I had a choice of things to do at the second round of the auction, and did the wrong thing.

At the time I thought we were playing Lebensohl (we had discussed it the last time we played two months ago), so decided to support her diamonds showing a better than minimum with diamond support (I thought the hand was better than minimum). 3NT goes off whilst 4H makes. Should I have just responded 2H on my second bid (I didn't think that quite did the hand justice), or go through 2NT then bid 3H?

Rebidding 2H does not limit your hand when playing Lebensohl. It merely shows five-plus Hearts. Showing that you hold five cards in a major takes precedence. You could have a dog for a hand, but how do you find a 5-3 major fit unless you rebid the suit? Whether you will ever get to Hearts with partner holding a stiff Heart is another question. At least, by rebidding Hearts, you might then be able to bid 3H to tell partner that you hold a six bagger and some values.

Oh, I thought rebidding 2H shows a heart suit and a bag of rubbish (5-7 HCP), a jump to 3H shows a very good suit (0-1 losers) and 8+ points, and 2NT followed by 3H shows a 5+ card suit, a worse suit than directly bidding 3H, and 8+ HCP.

Maybe I should have just treated my hand as the 5-7 HCP it is and rebid 2H. We may have ended up playing there (partner held 17 HCP) and at least got a plus score and a better MP score.

I think the normal method is 2H to play, 3H forcing, and 2N followed by
3H invitational but not forcing.

On this action 2S, not 2NT, followed by 3H shows an invitational hand with six+ Hearts in the version of "Leibensohl over a reverse" that I learned. 2NT or fourth suit, whichever is cheapest, is the relay in the way I read and have agreed to play. The two questions are: "is this hand good enough" and "Is it wrong to ignore the Diamond fit?" I think the answers are no and no and I would rebid 2H, non-forcing showing six.

In other partnerships I would bid 2H as a one-round force, not guaranteeing six.

In the UK what you are describing is called 'Blackout', but many play
lebensohl which uses 2N. I think blackout is better but obviously only
if you have discussed it as It is definitely not the default agreement
where I live.
