Vul vs non-vuln. After some enquiry on here about how to improve 3 level pre-empts (thanks to those who responded), I opened 3H, weak, showing at least 5-5 in the majors.

This didn't work out terribly well:

N E S W
3H* X P 4C
P 5C AP

Opponents have a nine card club fit, and partner held Q73, so having practically shown my hand in the auction, East proceeds to finesse my partner out of her queen, making 12 tricks (13 tricks are there after this play if East can pick the DJ up as well).

The opposing hands:

32 AK8
JT4 A
A982 KQT4
AJ85 KT642

That got us 4/14 MPs, thankfully telling declarer how to play the clubs only cost 1 MP. Only two pairs bid the slam (one going off), two pairs didn't bid game, 3NT made either 7 or 10 tricks (heart led in the former, spade led in the latter), and someone in 5D just making.

Did you give the correct vulnerability?

Then the opponents had +500 available at 3Hx. Why didn't they take it?

Looking at West's hand in isolation, presumably West judged that taking out the double would be better than leaving it in. It is not obvious to me that leaving the double in will be better. East does have a strong hand for the takeout double.

Maybe this was the first time they had seen what you think is a suitable unfav 3-bid.

Next time they will know better.

And I can provide many examples where a shape-based overcall provided the only; a) lead/defense, b) the only makeable game, and c) a profitable sacrifice.

With risk comes reward, but it still carries risk. Eric Rodwell considers shape to be paramount in competing. I tend to side with this level of expertise.

As to your actual question, Cappelletti himself always had a singleton king or queen when he used his eponymous convention. At least against me.

3H is fine on this hand, even vul. In a good field you kept the opps out of 6C

But can you then open 3H also with AKQ10xxx and out? A hand producing a vulnerable game when partner has H singleton and 2 aces.

is it your experience this is playable at mp vul against not?

with one of the suits so topless?

with -500 available in this particular deal if the opponents choose to double?
