Matchpoints, nobody vulnerable. LHO deals. After two passes, RHO opens 2D (weak and natural). You have:

Do you double, or overcall 2H, or something else?

What would you expect most people would do with this hand in an open pairs event at a sectional tournament (ACBL)?

Partner has less than an opening hand so, seemingly we are outgunned. I'll Pass.
LHO has less than an opening hand. Supposedly, the 2D bidder has less than an opening hand. A bid of 2H or even Double isn't too bad as we control the Majors (for the bidding at least.)

I guess "the field" will bid 2H.

I'll join the passers.

I have no idea what the field will do.

2H looks clearcut to me

Non-vul, I'm bidding 2H. But nothing is clear-cut.
Bidding with this hand takes the pressure off of pard.
Pard need not stretch to reopen.

2H for me. I would expect this to go plus, we likely have a fit (or hearts could be 3-3), and I don't expect to beat 2D. It would be nice to find a spade fit but double will miss the likely 5-3 heart, often landing us in an inferior club contract.

with this weak 4cS I bid 2H; with much better S quality I would risk a DBL (showing both MM or strength)

I double, and I expect that most others would do the same.

If partner advances 2NT lebensohl, I do bid 3C.

Sure, that's a hand that makes double look silly. xxxxx x xxxx xxx
does the same for 2H.

If partner does have that hand, the bidding might continue with
(XX)-P-(P), and now I can get my 2H call in.

Doesn't this point beg the question of what style of doubles you use?
If your partner knows that you're likely to double on (5-4)=2=2 or
(5-4)=1=3 to keep the other major in the picture, then surely they're
likely to bid 2H on Ron's 2=3=4=4 Yarborough and play 2H on what's
known to be at least a 4-3 fit rather than risk playing 3C on a
possible 4-2 or 4-3 fit?

I don't like Double either but where did partner _get_ that hand. LHO passed, partner passed and RHO opened 2D. Granted the third-seat 2D might be a bit heavy but isn't a zero-count _extremely_ unlikely?

Is the field playing weak 2D? If not, everyone else got to open 1H. I overcall 2H if the field isn't almost universally playing weak 2D. If they are, I have a tougher decision but I lean toward bidding.
