Discussion:
Conversion of .bri-files to more common format?

After each bridge night at the club, I would like to do some
statistics on the hands. The file with the hands are in .bri-format.
Does anyone know of a tool that can convert these files to a more
common file type, like pbn or lin?

Each hand in the file is basically just a long string of numbers - if
anyone here knows how to "read" the string of numbers, then that could
help a lot as an alternative to an actual converter. Then I can
convert the files myself.

BRI format is a subset of DUP format. (DUP also includes DGE
format for verification). Structure is 78 ASCII numbers per deal
(maybe with a line terminator) to designate the North, East and
South hands in that order. Each hand uses 26 bytes. Each two
numbers represents a card (01 = SA, 02 = SK ... 52 = C2).

I did not include this format in my BFC utility, since I wasn't
aware it was used alone. See http://www.rpbridge.net/rpbr.htm#11
and click on "Bridge File Converter" for a free utility to convert
among RBN PBN LIN EML REC DAT DUP formats.

The BRI record is 128 bytes long, the first 78 of which are the ASCII
numbers described above.

Then follows 10 bytes intended for the information contained in the
last ten bytes of a DUP record, these bytes frequently contain just
ASCII spaces.

The remaining 40 bytes have always been reserved for possible future
use, they should be set to 22 spaces followed by 18 "Low-values"
(all bits in each byte set to zero).

There must never be any line terminator between the records in a
BRI-file (nor in DUP- or DGE- files)!

Hi

If you send me the appropriate file(s) to elsid [at] elsid.co.za, I
can convert your .bri to .pbn and to .lin with DealMaster Pro.

Regards

Sid

Thank you for deconstructing bri-files - and thank you, Sid, for
offering to convert the bri-files. I now have gotten my hands on a small
program that can convert bri to pbn.
