In an open pairs event at a sectional tournament (ACBL) what fraction of the players do you think would open this hand?

Playing a sound opening, this is a clear pass.
Playing a 12-14 NT, I still pass.

As usual, I have no idea what the field will do.

For What Little It's Worth.................

I would open this hand. The minor suit jacks are worth their HCP since they are supported by the higher honor. The Spade queen is worth it's full value since it is supported by the 10.

Take away the 10 of Spades and I pass.

I expect well over half the field to open.

I pass, a majority will open. QTx, xx, KJxxx, AJx I open, a majority will
pass. No idea about ACBL of course.

Don't know, don't care.

Open 1D. In the first 3 seats open every 12 HCP hand
except 4 queens and 4 jacks.

Playing 2/1 or the like, no. Playing weak NT, 1NT. Playing Roman Club or other Weak Club (probably) 1C or whatever the balanced junk opening is.

The 12HCP are pretty solid, but the hand has 9 losers so a suit opening would be iffy. Goren subtracts 1 HCP for 4333 distribution. So for suit play, the hand is 10 HCP, and 9 losers (unless one thinks 10HCP requires increasing the loser count to 10). Partner needs more than a minimum for a suit contract. NT doesn't play too badly with 12 opposite 12 if one feels aggressive.

Yes of course. This is an obvious opening unless your name is Caspar Milquetoast.

It is my policy to open any 12 hcp including an Ace; a 1NT rebid suggests 12-14 hcp so this is within range. I think 90% would open this hand. Clearly, this is below the old Goren 13 standard but seems normal when playing 15-17 notrumps.

Yes, it has 13 cards and 12 points, so I open. What fraction? I guess 2/3.

Yes - either 1N (playing 10-12 notrump), or 1D. IMO 60% would open.

I open 1D if playing Strong NT and 1NT if playing Weak NT. I think over 50%, more like 65%, of the field would open this hand in Connecticut tournaments over the last few years. I have played in partnerships that would not open this hand and that is OK also but my more recent partnerships open it.
