P bids 3S

Pass Pass 1H 1S
Pass 3S Pass ?

Do you bid 4S?

CHO is a self declared expert so you might expect a UCB or similar.

UCB = Unassuming Cue Bid, e.g. bidding 3H in this sequence is constructive - a sound raise to 3S.
3S would be preemptive

Just curious - RHO is a 3rd-seat opener and LHO remained silent and N-S has the boss suit, so why would a preempt be needed?

That is a good point and the preempt has its pros/cons
We were both red at IMPS so 3S puts a lot of pressure on the RHO with a 3 suited 16 count.
However 3S can also highlight a spade shortage and push them into game.

Y6ou don't tell us the vulnerability or whether it's pairs or teams. If
we're NV, then partner won't have much, and I'd pass. If we're
vulnerable, then I think at teams I'd try 4S, but I'm not sure at pairs.
My good intermediates in diamonds are what make trying for game
tempting.

You already judged that your hand was too strong for 2H.

What has happened to change your mind?

I'm not so sure of that valuation, but having made it you have to stay the course.

The decision to bid 4S depends on the treatment of the 3S bid. With all my regular partners, this is preemptive, maybe something like (Kxxx,xx,xxx, xxxx or Kxx,x,xxxx, xxxxx). In which case, pass is correct. With an advanced/expert partner would you expect a bit more of a subtle bid, e.g. 2H/3H as a cuebid.
We were red and responder had

For me, this is a clear 3H bid.

Apparent your partner does not play cuebids like that. So 3H was a limit
raise. At matchpoint, I think a limit raise with that hand is rather
conservative but not crazy.
