Matchpoint Pairs, Both Vulnerable

Spades makes six, Hearts makes Seven.

Second Position Hand (Call it East):

S: AJT764
H: Q764
D: 5
C: 62

Fourth Position Hand (Call it West):

S: K3
H: AKJ52
D: AK6
C: A74

The auction starts:

(2D) P (3D) ?

Things to think about:

1. If West doubles, East will bid 4S.
2. If West bids 3N, transfers are on, but what would 4C mean? (We don't have an agreement -- what should it mean to you?).

What's wrong with

(2D) P (3D) X
(P) 4S (P) 5H
(P) 5N (P) 7H (IMPS)
6H (MP)
The jump to game in spades tells West that East is at least Ace 5th in spades and a great hand for the pass. The early auction tells you East has a singleton in diamonds. The 5N pick a slam bid shows AJxxxx or better in spades and QJx or Qxxx in hearts.

So we can deduce that East has either AJxxxx QJx x xxx/AJxxxx Qxxx x xx. From this the 7H bid is decent in the first case and solid in the 2nd.

At least this is how it works in my head...

Getting to 6H seems fairly easy.

2D : (NB) : 3D : (X)
NB : (4D) : NB : (6H)

After 4D (pick a major) 6H is easy.

And if West's clubs and hearts are reversed, how would the bidding go after 4D?

That's why one should preempt liberally. It makes it really hard for opponents to find their best suit and best level.
Why would East ever play West for 22 HCP and 9 controls?

I suspect my bidding would be:

(2D) P (3D) X
(P) 4S (P) 6N

but 2nd hand may try 4D instead of 4S after which we will at lest play
in hearts but 7H is not likely.

Why not do a simulation and then tell us the answer?
